Big news for snooker fans this week as Barry Hearn, the man responsible for bringing sexy back to the world of darts will now take over the key role of chairman to the WPBSA. Hearn’s appointment has justifiably been welcomed by the snooking community, who generally agree that the sport is currently in the doldrums, lacking in tournaments and real characters at the table. It is hard to disagree that the sport has a bit of an image problem as it enters into its second most important event this week from the dizzyingly glamorous Shropshire town of Telford, sponsored by the unarguably tasty but hardly stylish… Pukka Pies. Premier League glitz this is not.
However, we at snooker punk hope that Hearn will not take his game shortening strategy too far so we are left with are pale dissipation of snooker’s greatness along the lines of Twenty20 cricket. We are all happy to hear him propose more tournaments as long as the flagship tournaments are left untouched for us fans of the longer form of the game. If the World Championship is changed so it is no longer a career/degree/relationship threateningly long snooker marathon then it would be a sad loss.
So good luck Hearny, we are all looking forward to a brave new world for snooker. But don’t go nuts.
